“Cantiere Donatello” 2023
Insights from the exhibition
“Donatello. Erfinder der Renaissance” (Berlin, 2022-2023)

The 2022-2023 edition of the seminar – titled “Leben der Kunst” – has revolved around the exhibition “Donatello. Erfinder der Renaissance” (“Donatello. Inventor of the Renaissance”), curated by Dr. Neville Rowley in cooperation with Francesco Caglioti, Laura Cavazzini and Aldo Galli at the Gemäldegalerie of Berlin from September 2, 2022 to January 9, 2023.
The exhibition – the second of a three-part event taking place in Florence, Berlin, and London – is the result of an international cooperation between the three leading institutions gathering works by Donatello, namely the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
The temporary presence of Donatello’s works in Berlin has given us the opportunity to follow the history of dispersal, acquisition, and display of the works of the Florentine master in museum collections all over the world.
In a movement à rebours across the exhibition, the students have examined the historical trajectory of Donatello’s works as well as the episodes, sales, and controversies that have contributed to shape his myth from the Florentine Renaissance to this day.
